I am pleased to have heard the news in Feburary 2022 that I have been accepted as a member with the Society of Wood Engravers - which involved showing my engravings and sketches to a panel of judges. I wrote an article to introduce myself as a new member in the publication "Multiples" towards the end of 2022 and hope to do more wood engravings and enter them for future exhibitions.
So it is now a new year 2022 - last year was another difficult year for us all - it was good however to be exhibiting again - in June with a shared show at the White Box gallery in Blackheath then in November at the Woolwich contemporary print fair, then the Festival of Print exhibition in Mile End and then Hexham, Northumberland.
I had a fun and productive time in early September at Cherryburn National Trust doing wood engraving at the birthplace of Thomas Bewick - and I hope to enter the Society of Wood Engravers show with my piece. On the visit to Northumberland I was fortunate to visit a gallery in Hexham - Hallgate gallery run by Ben Haslam - and as a result of the visit 4 of us wood engravers have been invited to show our engravings at the gallery this November which is a great opportunity. The address is Haslam's of Hallgate Gallery, 22 - 24 Hallgate, Hexham, Northumberland, NE46 1XD
I was lucky to have 2 of my pieces accepted for the Woolwich show for the 3rd year running - it was on the East London Printmakers stand from 11 November to 14 November.
NEWS FOR 2020
I have work accepted in the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair - both on the East London Printmakers stand and I have also had a print independently accepted. However due to the coronavirus the show this year will be online only. It is called The Online Edition #FindArtthat fits - this will run from 12 November 2020 to 13 December 2020. 11 November Online Preview Day.
I am delighted to have a selection of my linocuts and wood engravings accepted by the Kevis House Gallery in Petworth - it is a lovely gallery in Sussex close to beautiful Petworth House and Gardens for 2019/20. Check out their website at www.kevishouse.co.uk - I am amongst the list of artists and work is available for sale through the gallery and online.
In June I had planned to be having a show (the White Box Gallery) in Blackheath with my fellow artist and printmaking friend, Alex Robb - however owing to the closure of the gallery as a result of the virus the exhibition will be postponed till June 2021. However we still plan to show a small selection of our work in the window as a taster in July 2020. Address of the gallery is The White Box Gallery, 5 Hare and Billet Road, Blackheath London SE3 0RB.
I have been accepted for the 82nd Wood Engraving show in 2020 which is another travelling show and the venues are as follows: Bankside Gallery London 4 - 23 Feb Zillah Bell gallery, Thirsk 28 Feb - 21 March North Wall gallery, Oxford 25 March - 18 April Northern Print, Newcastle 29 April - 27 June Frames Gallery, Perth 4 - 25 July Sea Pictures Gallery, Clare 1 - 29 August

Past Workshops in Italy
Italy Collagraph Workshop 2011
We had another wonderful week at Montefiore Castle and this time I had 2 Italian students, as well as one woman who came all the way from South Africa to do the course and a woman from Slovenia; all of whom worked very hard continuing long after the 4pm finish till 7 or 8pm sometimes. I had 2 very keen interpreters but all my students spoke reasonable English so the interpreters got stuck in to learning about collagraphs too which kept them occupied!
At the same time, a linocut course was going on and an interesting course about theatre design and just like last year we all had lunch together in the Courtyard. The week ended with the Moon Festival - it was just a shame that the good weather did not last. Feedback was good and everyone really enjoyed themselves and felt they had learnt something and produced mounted prints to take home.
Collagraph Workshop in Montefiore Conca, Italy 18 - 22 July 2011
I ran another collagraph workshop in Italy in 2011.
The Studio is within The Hilltop Medieval Castle of Montefiori Conca near Rimini with views over the countryside to the Adriatic coast. Workshops were such a success that the programme was expanded for this summer.
The workshops ran from Monday to the Friday from 10 to 4pm and all materials were provided on the course. Other courses were going on at the same time in adjoining studios and a packed lunch was shared with other students in the courtyard of the castle. In the evenings there were good local restaurants to unwind and relax after working hard in the studio all day.
Scroll down for a short report on the course.
Prices £325/concessions £300 for the course excluding food, accommodation and flights.
I shall be running a similar course to last years with one extra evening added to allow more time for experimentation. We can work on further techniques for those who have done the course before to further your skills.
When - 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 June 2011 from 7pm to 10pm Where - East London Printmakers Studio
2010 News
Italy Collagraph Workshop 2010
We had a wonderful week in the castle studio - there were five Italian students and four from England to enjoy experimenting with collagraphs. The artwork produced was very good and there was time to produce a window mount for the best work produced at the end of the week. This was followed by glasses of proseco to celebrate the success of the workshop and everyone received a certificate of attendance.
Each day a light lunch became a sociable occasion in the castle courtyard outside the studio where the collagraph students joined those doing the Japanese woodcut course. It was rare for people to finish printing at 4pm and sometimes work continued to 6pm! The evenings were fun and a time to unwind with plenty of delicious Italian food and wine - well deserved after the busy working days.
Many thanks to Umberto Giovannini for organising the set of workshops and to Rebecca, my assistant who worked very hard every day and finally to Luca - our fantastic interpreter who coped well with being the only man amongst so many women!
A wonderful creative holiday opportunity is available this summer, in a large studio set in a medieval castle in Montefiore (literally translated as mountain of flowers), just outside Rimini in Italy. The workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some experience. The workshop will run for 5 days from 10 to 4pm. The studio will be a beautiful cool haven from the heat of the sunshine in the Italian summer. I shall be teaching the workshop and other printmaking techniques will be taught in the first 2 weeks of August. The cost of the workshop is £300 excluding accommodation and flights.
Description of the Workshop Producing a collagraph is a simple non toxic process using cardboard rather than lino or metal as the printing plate. The plate is made by cutting into and sticking on everyday materials (such as embossed wallpaper, coffee grains, netting etc) to the cardboard to produce a textured plate rather like a collage. From this, prints are made by using various inking and masking techniques which can produce remarkable sculptural results.
Initially we will experiment with the effect of texture in one colour. As the course progresses we will introduce more colours and other more advanced techniques such as chine colle (adding Japanese colouredpaper to the print as it goes through the press) to add depth and interest to the prints. Finally, the skill of presenting the work will be demonstrated on the last day.
Please email me for further details if you are interested.
Experimental Collagraph Workshop- April 2010
I shall be teaching a workshop for beginners and those with some experience which will include use of chine colle, applications of carborundum and masking techniques. I will be structuring the workshop at various levels so that people who have attended a previous workshop of mine can build upon their existing skills whilst also teaching beginners.
When - Wednesday evenings, 7, 14, 21, 28 April 2010 from 7pm to 10pm. Where - East London Printmakers Studio.
As of 6 February there are 4 places left so sign up as soon as you can if you are interested!
